Often fat can deposit in multiple layers of the area under the chin giving a ‘double chin’ appearance with fullness or redundancy in this area.
There are in-office injectable treatments that can be utilized for the treatment of this excessive fat tissue (deoxycholic acid, Kybella). Only certain patients are good candidates for this treatment. These may need to be repeated several times for optimal results
Surgical procedures can be accomplished to treat these areas as well. This is referred to as chin/neck liposuction, double chin surgery, submentoplasty, and others. This usually involves a very small hidden incision behind the chin. Based on the patient’s individual anatomy, multiple types of techniques are utilized to create a more refined under-chin contour, jawline, and appearance. This is sometimes done in conjunction with a chin augmentation to help if there are structural issues.
Recovery from this procedure involves wearing a headband to hold pressure on the area and prevent fluid collections. Results are often seen immediately, and as swelling improves over the first weeks to months this improves more and more. Complications are very uncommon and downtime is 1-2 weeks.
