Sinus infections bring pain and misery to millions of Americans. When the sinus inflammation is ongoing or infections recur frequently, then sinus surgery is often recommended. The goal of sinus surgery is to improve the drainage of the sinuses, reduce infections and inflammation, and provide access for rinses and topical medications to be able to go into the sinuses.
Sinus surgery is far more commonplace now than in the past and are much better tolerated. Advances in medicine have led to procedures that are minimally invasive with very little risk for complications.
Sinus Surgery Procedures
Depending on the patient, there are several surgical sinus procedures available. These include:
- Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). This minimally invasive surgery involves use of an endoscope through the nostrils with no incisions, scars, or bruising on the face. The procedure is completed entirely through the nostrils, so no scars are left behind. Pain is mild and congestion after surgery is temporary, lasting about a week.
- Image guided surgery. Often FESS is performed with a 3D mapping system using CT scans and information about the exact position of surgical instruments. This allows the surgeon to accurately guide instruments through complex sinus passages, making surgery more efficient and safe.
The recovery is much easier than in years past and the nose is not packed with gauze as it once was. Prescription pain medicine is needed usually for a few days; most patients find that over-the-counter medicine is sufficient for recovery. The only packing material placed in the nose is absorbable and dissolves over the first several weeks after surgery. Congestion is normal for the first week, your surgeon will clean the nose out at 1 week after surgery. This provides a good deal of relief! Activity restrictions average 2 weeks depending on your procedure.
